Such a common household item such as a tea set could be easily be overlooked as a work of art, though its presence is such a dominate element in our daily routines, we tend to question its history and origins. A work of art such as a ceramic teacup’s value is greatly enhanced after a story or process is revealed. Sentimental value and attachments to these objects are generated over time; their presences trigger intimate feelings and fond memories.
Michiyo Miyai is a master ceramic potter from Kyoto, Japan and I was fortunate enough to document her beautiful craft with still photography and film to gain some perspective on her process. This film is a small insight into the beauty of Kyoto and how its translated in Michiyo Miyai's work.
